Biography
Orlando L. Alvarez, Jr. was elected to his first four-year City Council term starting January 1, 2026. His current term expires December 31, 2029.
Work History
Professionally, Alvarez is a healthcare consultant and has served as a strategic advisor to health systems across the United States and Europe. His industry experience also includes leadership roles with the Cleveland Clinic, Sisters of Charity Health System and the University of Miami Health System.
Volunteer Activities
Alvarez has long been an active participant in his community. Most recently, he was appointed to the Citizens Advisory Group for the City of Shaker Heights and also serves on the board of the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio, where he chairs the Strategic Planning Committee. Alvarez has served as chair of the Personnel Board for the City of Miami Beach and as a member on that board's healthcare committee. He was also President of the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce .
Education
Alvarez earned his bachelor's degree from Bennington College in Vermont where he studied Literature and Anthropology.
Personal Life
Alvarez was born in Madrid, Spain and raised in Miami, Florida. He and his husband, Ned Medina, have been residents of Shaker Heights for four years. Previously, they lived in Florida and in Lakewood, Ohio.
