Recreation Strategic Plan

Plan Documents

Overview

In 2025, the City of Shaker Heights finalized a Recreation Strategic Plan that sets the stage for future recreation investments throughout the city. The Plan focuses on key locations for future recreational facilities/amenities and proposes priority uses for each site: Shaker Heights Middle School, Thornton Park, Chelton Park/Shaker School District Bus Depot, and the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Building/Colonnade area. The City also made upgrades to Hildana Park in 2025.

The development of the Plan was informed by robust community engagement and also included a comprehensive analysis of recreation needs; an evaluation of existing conditions at city recreation facilities; and research into recreation trends.

Community Engagement

To create a Recreation Strategic Plan that serves all of Shaker, the Planning and Recreation departments offered residents many opportunities to share their vision for the future of recreation. Engagement included online polling, in-person pop-up events, a project website for online engagement, and formal meetings. The results of that community engagement can be found here:  https://engagemksk.mysocialpinpoint.com/shaker-heights-strategic-recreation-plan
