[ARCHIVED] Storm response and reminders

Community Advisory graphic for City of Shaker Heights

In the wake of the severe storm that passed through our region on Tuesday, Aug. 6, we know that many Shaker residents are still without power. We understand this is extremely frustrating. First Energy reports they have crews working around the clock in 16-hour shifts to make repairs as quickly and safely as possible. Safety Reminders

  • Please report power outages to First Energy by calling 888-544-4877; texting OUT to 544487; or visiting https://www.firstenergycorp.com/fehome.html
  • Stay away from downed power lines and call 911
  • Residents experiencing power outage and who are at risk of health consequences should call 911. Paramedics from the Shaker Heights Fire Department will evaluate their needs
  • Please check on the wellbeing of elderly neighbors, relatives and friends
  • Candles should never be left unattended or near anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, furniture, or mattresses. Use flashlights, not candles, if possible.  FEMA candle warnings.

Free Ice

First Energy is offering free ice through participating Giant Eagle stores, the closest of which are in Maple Heights and South Euclid.  Customers without power may pick up one bag of ice and two gallons of water free of charge. No ID required. List of participating stores.

Spoiled Food

We understand you may have food that is spoiling and you may not want to wait until your next refuse collection day to dispose of it. Public Works is now accepting spoiled food at the Public Works Service Center, 15600 Chagrin Boulevard, between 8:00am and 3:15pm through Wednesday, August 14.

Device Charging

Thornton Park has WiFi and a limited number of free charging boxes and outlets in the building lobby. Residents are welcome to cool off, charge up, and connect to WIFI there. Hours vary. Check this link: https://www.shakerheightsoh.gov/281/Ice-Arena

Our colleagues at the Shaker Heights Public Library invite residents without power to stop by and charge devices at either branch. Computers are available, too, on a first-come, first-served basis.
