Total Solar Eclipse Watch Party: Planetarium in the Park

Monday, April 8, 1-4 pm
Location: Thornton Park (3301 Warrensville Center Rd.)

We are counting down the days until the Total Solar Eclipse! Shaker Heights Recreation Department is partnering with Shaker Library for this ‘watch party’ of the April 8 Total Solar Eclipse, and Shaker residents are invited to celebrate at Thornton Park. Bring a blanket or towel, find a spot on the Sledding Hill, and enjoy relaxing ‘planetarium-style’ electronic music; along with crafts, food, a book giveaway, and more during this otherworldly occasion!

Free eclipse glasses will be available  at the watch party while supplies last.

The Farnsleigh Lot at Thornton will be closed to vehicular traffic; we ask all attendees to park in the Warrensville Center Lot, walk, bike or use public transportation.  This once-in-a-generation phenomenon with draw many people, so traffic jams may occur.  Please make a plan,  give yourself plenty of travel time, and in the event of traffic congestion,   please be patient.

Free eclipse glasses for residents (while supplies last)

A reminder that to watch a solar eclipse safely you must wear special glasses that allow you to look directly at the sun. Staring at the sun without proper eye protection can cause permanent damage. Sunglasses do not provide adequate protection.

The City is pleased to offer Shaker residents free solar eclipse glasses, while supplies last. Here are the giveaway details:

  • Pick up glasses at City Hall (3400 Lee Rd.)
  • 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday, while supplies last
  • Shaker residents only, please
  • Up to four pairs per household

Glasses available at Watch Party & from Shaker Schools

Help us serve as many residents as possible with our eclipse glasses giveaway! If you plan to attend the watch party at Thornton Park, no need to pick up glasses from City Hall. Attendees will be offered glasses upon entering the event, while supplies last.

The Shaker Schools will also be providing free eclipse glasses to all students so no need to pick up glasses for your Shaker Schools student from the City. Thank you!
