The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is made up of volunteers who are specially trained to assist the Fire Department during emergencies.
There are more than 1,100 CERT teams in operation in the United States, including in Shaker. The program is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Members of CERT participate in a special training program that includes everything from disaster preparedness to fire safety, even light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, disaster psychology and terrorism. In Shaker, volunteers must also maintain current CPR and first-aid certifications. CERT members then serve a vital role in the community, education their neighbors about disaster preparedness and assisting response teams in the event of an emergency.
